Synopsis
In 2020, a 28 year old widowed construction worker, Andrew Lissing sets out to find a project to do in order to purchase a wagon after his 8 year old daughter, Isabella. Bella, becomes obsessed with wanting a wagon for Christmas. Christmas proves to be especially challenging as the twosome have not celebrated it since Isabella's birth and the passing of her mother shortly after, in December 2012.
With lack of work during the winter, Andrew, using his own stored lumber, starts to secretly build a wagon for Bella while continuing to seek out jobs with the help of his best friend, T.J.
The two set out one day to help a family wanting work done on their home before winter sets in. While enroute to the site, Andrew and T.J. are involved in an accident which severely injures Andrew.
With Andrew now incapacitated, his driven, controlling mother, Miranda seeks out to help. However, her help comes with an agenda attached. Her objective is to gain custody of Bella who mimics some of her qualities. Miranda has hopes of training Bella up to take over her business one day. Her plan is finally set in motion when Andrew has an outburst one day at the hospital, proving to Miranda his inability to take care of Bella. Miranda then sets her plan of gaining custody of Bella in motion by threatening hospital staff with legal action unless they release Andrew to home knowing full well that he cannot care for himself or his child.
Once home, an eccentric and somewhat anxious caregiver, with her own excess baggage, named Kendra, is called in to care for Andrew. In the process of her caring for him she bonds with Bella. After a breathing issue lands Andrew in the hospital a second time, Bella comes up with the idea of selling rosebuds from a wagon in hopes that she alone can raise funds for a surgery which might enable him to walk again. Andrew, however, who has always had his reservations of Bella selling rosebuds, urges Kendra not to encourage her. Wanting her to have somewhat of a Christmas, Andrew, late one night, by sheer force and determination, forces himself up and into his wheelchair. He quietly wheels out into the garage to finish the wagon. One day while playing out in the attached garage, Bella stumbles upon the wagon. Thinking it is a Christmas miracle she becomes elated and immediately tells Kendra. The two then plot together to obtain the rosebuds which they plan to sell from the wagon and spread Christmas cheer as well as help Andrew get his surgery.
During their journey each day they run across unique individuals, some supportive and some not so supportive, such as a disgruntled flower shop owner who perceives Bella as a threat to his business. The two are also caught one day by Miranda which adds fuel to the fire in her quest to obtain custody of Bella.
Upon being caught by Andrew, Kendra is immediately dismissed from her position leaving Bella distraught. It is then that Miranda comes in to take Bella home with her. On the brink of hopelessness, Robert Lissing, the father of Andrew, learns of a Christmas surprise through the town's mayor which entails the entire community rallying behind Bella by donating money to her cause. In the end, the mayor, along with a majority of the town, including the surgeon, informs Andrew that he will get the surgery which will enable him the best opportunity to possibly walk again. It is during this time that Andrew also forgives Kendra who was vital in helping to raise funds. During this time Miranda abandons her custody plan learning that what is best for Bella is to simply be with Andrew. This all leaves Andrew and Bella rejoicing, especially because they can celebrate Christmas with a renewed joy once again!
